Worst storm to hit in 30 years. Eight dead including two toddlers who were swept away in a car with their folks. People flagging down helicopters from the roofs of their houses.
You know it’s a big deal when they devote the first nine pages of the Sunday Telegraph to the storm. (I confess: I found “Hysterical Paris Returns to Jail" just as compelling)
I am glad to say we haven’t had to grab our things and run. Worst we’ve had to put up with over the weekend is having to stay in and not go out, something we were glad to do as the howling gale rattled our windows.
When we did go out – to buy groceries and grab a bite – we were shocked to see people carrying umbrellas. I didn’t even think people here possessed umbrellas. Whenever I carried mine (mostly for sun protection) I felt like an idiot.
The Coogee sidewalk was flooded with sand which had blown in from the beach and the sea was foamy. Nothing for the kids to enjoy but rain water dripping from the roof.
