passing on the violins

There are three small violins in our house which have not been opened or touched for two decades.

They are a quarter, a half and a three-quarter sized.

These are the violins I grew up with, which accommodated my lengthening arms and fingers, from the age of five or thereabouts.

Mothers like to talk about passing things on to their children in the rosy hope for continuity.

I have never had the slightest compunction for any of the trio to pick up the violin.

Truth be told: It’s just too much work for me to keep them disciplined and intent on an instrument which frankly involves a lot of pain.

Neck pain, chin pain, finger pain, back pain, leg pain.

If the violin bug should somehow bite sometime, then they are welcome to tap on the free products (violins) and services (me) at home.

But for these three, they have never been interested in the violin. Day, in fact, used to sob as a little boy whenever he heard me play.

Sometimes I wonder if we should be more pushy in making them do things which they may not necessarily want to now, but will appreciate in future. But then, it’s really not us.

For sure, though: If Day doesn’t start the violin about now (and I’m pretty sure he won’t), he will never be more than average.

Maybe Lu? Last chance!

Er... that's a rather large violin that your girl is holding in the pic though. ;D

I happily sold away my elder boy's 1/4-size and 1/2-size sometime ago. Was afraid that they won't keep well while not being used. How do you store yours?

We do have a 1/32, 1/16, 1/10, and 1/8 though. *haha*. The 2 smallest ones I bought for our 3yo from a friend who selected them while working in this industry overseas. The larger 2 were given to us by another teacher. All brandnew! And all for the youngest boy! Such pressure! haha!

I do agree with you about the starting late. My elder boy started the month he turned 8yo. While he's good and does well and totally enjoys all his performances with groups/ensembles, it is true that he'll probably never be super fantastic compared to those who started younger. He just took up the viola 2mths ago. I think it suits him!

Yup its too big for her. It only suits david right now.
Storage - just in the cupboard la! Cool dry dark place.
Viola is a more pragmatic instrument to play. Too many violinists, not enough violists. So it will be easier for himto find work as a violist than vice versa.

His teacher is a violist, so it's quite a natural progression, yah? Although he did get his 1st paid gig performing on violin in a quartet for a wedding recently. haha. For the moment, he does switch with the violin/viola, depending on occasion esp as his school group is quite small.
